TWO MALE CHIPMUNKS WILL FIGHT. YOU ARE BEST SOURCING A FEMALE.
USUALLY IT IS BEST TO KEEP ONE MALE TO 3 FEMALES OR JUST FEMALE GROUPS.
HAVE YOU TRIED THE RSPCA AND LOCAL RESCUE CENTRES??
OH AND THE RSPCA SITE: www.RSPCA.ORG.UK HAVE A DETAILED LEAFLET ON CHIPMUNK CARE IN PDF FORMAT IF THATS ANY HELP.

THE RSPCA WEBSITE DOES A LOT OF OTHER CARE LEAFLETS TOO.

I work in one of the biggest pet shops in the uk and do know how to care for my chipmunk but people keep telling me that males will live together quite happily so i just got a bit confused as to weather or not they can.
thanks

I HAVE WITNESSED MALE CHIPMUNK AGGRESSION PERSONALLY WITHIN A PETSHOP ENVIRONMENT AS I HAVE WORKED IN A PET SHOP ENVIRONMENT TOO.I AM ALSO CERTIFIED IN PETSTORE MANAGEMENT,WHICH IS A USEFUL THING TO HAVE.
YOU ARE RIGHT,SOME PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN KEEPING MALES TOGETHER, BUT IT IS NOT NATURAL, HENCE YOU DO GET TERRITORIAL AGGRESSION.IT IS MOST SUCCESSFUL IF YOU BUY THEM TOGETHER YOUNG.IF YOU HAVE AN ADULT MALE AND YOU INTRODUCE A YOUNGER UNKNOWN MALE THERE IS BOUND TO BE FIGHTING AS THE OLDER ONE IS TRYING TO KEEP HIS TERRITORY.
IN THE WILD MALES LIVE IN AN OPEN GROUP WITHIN AN AREA, SO THEY DO HAVE CONTACT WITH OTHER MALES BUT THE GROUNDS ARE NEUTRAL.
YOU WILL, AS YOU KNOW, GET CUSTOMERS AND OTHER STAFF WITH THEIR OWN OPINIONS ON ANIMAL KEEPING.
YOU ARE BEST TO LOOK TO A HIGHER SOURCE FOR THE CORRECT INFORMATION,LIKE THE PET CARE TRUST IN BEDFORD.THEY ARE THE PEOPLE WHO DO THE PETSTORE MANAGEMENT COURSES/CERTIFICATES AND WILL HAVE THE CORRECT INFORMATION.ALSO THE RSPCA LEAFLETS ARE IN GREAT DETAIL AN IDEAL TO GIVE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS.THIS WAY YOU CAN GET EVIDENCE IN BLACK AND WHITE THAT YOUR INFORMATION IS CORRECT.

Cool cheers for the info. called the RSPCS's in my area when i got your message and they do not have any females so im back to square one. You see my boys mate died but i didnt have him at the time i got him cos he was attacked by something at his previous owners house and thats were his mate died and now he is really start to chew the bars like crazy and he is non stop chirrping he awkes you up will the chirrping. I feel really sorry for him

He is out his enclosure most of the time and i hide treats and stuff round his cage to keep him entertained and i try to introduce new toys every week and i even but a really small teddy bear in his cage but he just pissed on it and ripped it to shreeds lol.

Im really worried and dont know what to do anymore

any suggestions

he really does feel sorry for himself.
he would do better with a girlfriend.
he is going to damage his teeth if he keeps chewing.he obviously is doing it through lonliness and bordom.he is also stressing being by himself.
you can only keep doing what you are now ubtil a mate turns up.
Make sure he has a lot of places to hide and plenty of climbing ropes and toys, make sure you have a branch of apple wood in the cage for him to strip the bark off and chew.you probably know that their teeth are constantly growing so wooden chwing accesories are essential.keep an eye out on the recently added board and keep advertising a wanted notice daily.chipmunks do come up sometimes

If you really want to locate a female badly I would put up some ads, in newspapers, pet shop windows/notice boards and maybe go to a mainly mammal selling pet shop and see if they can order one in for you. Im not sure where your from but maybe you could consider going up to Stapley Water Gardens ; which also have a pet shop. Last time I went they had ALOT of chipmunks of most colours so your bound to find a female there. If your interested in finding out more from this place let me know and I will give you the address and phone number. I think they can place orders for them too. If you do try this I would advise on getting 2-3 females if possible, just incase worst comes to worst he still has a mate or two left and you dont have this problem again.

Oh, hand raised is another matter, I just read your other thread. Unfortantly if worse comes to worse you might have to be happy with whatever colour or temprement you get as your male could stress himself to death.

Yeah but if i judt got an kind of female then in a way i wont really be fare on him if he cannt come out of his carge for some more exercise but thanks again for the advice.

by Richard Biddington
Hi Stacey, send an email to stevenbiddington@btinternet.com

This is my brother who has approx 12 chipmunks in an outdoor aviary, mixture of males and females.
Aged from 1 year upwards.

He lives in Gloucestershire if you want to give him a try.

Thanks a lot kay and richard
unfortunatly i live in the london area so i wont be able to get any females from your brother in Gloucestershire but thanks anyway

Well yes.. but better than him dyeing... if he stresses himself to death without one... I dont think he would turn completely untame, besides, have you not got an aviary where he can go out in the summer evenings? This is real excersise really.

by staceyvice
i have a large cage which is 4ft x 2ft x 2ft so its not exactly small.
12-01-2007
by jessica
I never said it was small.. just chipmunks do require alot of space.. however now that you mention it..
I was just trying to help, why ask for help on a forum if your going to get defensive? Thing is with pet care theres always going to be something you hear that you dont like, whether right or wrong. I was not attacking you personally, and that is exactly why I put a smiley face..
The main concern here is that hes going to stress himself to death but hey I dont know why I'm bothering.

* Is if hes going to stress himself to death*

everybody chill
Chipmunks do do better in aviaries.there is a lot more climbing space, you can put a lot more natural branches in there too.A nest box,and a bridge and hanging chew toys.
they are squrrels after all.
Please don't let him be alone too long. Jessica and i are naturally worried for his life as we are both strong animal lovers.

Thats what I mean Kay, chipmunks do better in aviaries.

Oh no i was not getting all defensive . sorry if must just be the way that i have been typing cos most of this stuff i have typed was when i was at work and we are not allowed to use the work computers but i have every now and again to check to see is any chipmunk are for sale and to see what you guys have written back.

Oh Kay, the two female chipmunks that are for sale are in Dundee so that means i cant get them but thanks for letting me know.

Once again sorry to Jessica if you thought i was lashing out.

Ok no problem Stacey, guess it was me being a bit defensivee too lol. What do you think of stapely water gardens as a choice then, not sure where your from but is that tooo far?

by staceyvice
