| On discovering a dead owl there are two main things you need to try and find out. What species of owl is it, and does it have a small ring on one of its ankles?
There are four different types of ring that the owl might have fitted. If it's a wild owl that you have found it could have a British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) ring. This is a silver-coloured metal ring with a unique number inscribed on it and the words ‘INFORM BRITISH MUSEUM NAT HIST LONDON, SW7'. If it's an escaped captive-bred bird that you've found it may have a closed ring which is a continuous alloy band or possibly a plastic cable tie, these both have individual numbers inprinted on them. Captive owls may also be micro-chipped. Any owl may also have one or more plastic colour rings.
If you come across an owl with a closed ring it means that it is captive-bred and should be reported to the Independent Bird Register (see Links page). If you think there is anything suspicious about the cause of death of the owl (for example poisoning or avian flu) then it should also be reported to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Please be aware of hygiene if handling dead birds and always wash your hands afterwards. If you are going to preserve the owl for a while and freeze it make sure that it is well wrapped up in carrier bags or sealed in an air tight container.
If you find a bird (dead or alive) that's wearing a BTO ring you can report it online through the Euring form.

If the bird concerned is ringed as captive-bred or micro chipped it's a good idea to contact the Independent Bird Register. The IBR's main purpose is to try and reunite lost/found birds with their owners

| european eagle owl? Could be that.. | 21-02-2007 by nerys
| i emailed the Independent bird register [enquiries@ibr.org.uk]
and this was their reply. it seems the owl is untraceable, as it does not have a registered ring
Nerys,
This has been reported to several times from several sources, unfortunately due to the fact it is wearing a non traceable ring it makes things very difficult for us.
The ring size (Y) suggests that it may be an Indian Eagle owl, as they are non registerable the letters FAL are not traceable so until someone contacts us to say they have lost one there is nothing more we can do, and when / if they do contact us we cannot tell them who or where it was found.
