26-05-2007 by Maz
| Does anyone know if GALS (Fulica) and Giant African Millipedes can be housed together. My tank is 3ftx18"x15" it has organic peat substrate 3", logs & moss. I have 2 snails approx 3" shell length I have always wanted a Giant Millipede and I have searched the internet to find information about housing snails and millipedes together but I have found nothing any help would be great!! Thanks in advance. |

| There are quite a few snail keepers that are against the idea because millies can produce a toxin through their skin when alarmed. It may not be harmful to humans but what about snails?
Hope this helps, Danni |

| Thanks for advice I just presumed they lived alongside each other in the wild and that it would be ok. Just as well I've got 2 tanks (well 5 but 3 have fish in). Thanks again |

| I can understand your thinking,as they are said to require the similar habitats. If you want to see any discussions on the matter go to www.petsnails.co.uk

| Hi Maz. No, they cant be kept together, yes, they may live along side eachother in the wild, but there is a much bigger area there, and will very rarely cross paths Millipedes do produce toxins, so therefore are unsuitable for ANY type of companion, in captivity. Hope it helps |

| Danielle, just to let you know, Millies toxins can be harmful/potentially dangerous (not sure about lethal) to humans, if you get the toxins into an open wound. So be careful to anyone wishing to handle them! lol |
