| does anyone know of a uk breeder or supplier of skunks or how much much they retail for? | 25-10-2007 by jessica
| about 450 I think | 02-11-2007 by nerys
| prices were more expensive this year.. they ranged from 450 up to about 800 depending on seller, colour and sex.
as its now ileagal to descent them, expect to see prices rise if anything..
you are more than welcome to get in touch to learn more about skunks though, i currently keep 6 of them
email me on nerys44(AT)hotmail.com
and i will give you a better email to use once i have contacted you via hotmail.
the pic attached, if it works, is Holly. she is one of the skunks i have had with me under treatment, she was in a fight and had bad wounds to her back
there are more pics of her and more about her story to be found here:

| omg they are adorable nery. you going to breed them? one thing ive always wondered do you have problems with the smell if scared or something? i forgot what its called but i know they sorta spray a foul smell when scared. do you get this in captivity? | 06-11-2007 by nerys
| these ones have all been descented. its a small quick operation to remove the anal gland, carried out when they are a few weeks old. It causes no known detriment to the health of the skunk afterwards. Its actually a smaller less complicated operation than a spay or castration, and leads to none of the behavioural changes seen in both castration and spaying post op.
skunk spray is a highly complex mixture of chemicals, and can cause tempory blindness if got in the eyes and bursting of red blood cells, the molecule is actually designed to be "sticky" this means that unlike say, a fart, you cannot waft away the smell, it actually clings to surfaces it comes into contact with for up to a couple of years!
the legality of descenting is a current sore point, they have recently moved to class it as mutilation, and thereofore categorise it as ileagal to do.
bearing in mind it is accecptable to do things like.. remove a cats testicles - when it lives in high rise flat in london and is never going to be at risk of breeding.. or remove a rabbits testicles.. so you can keep it in a 4x1 hutch in the garden.. or even do the same to a rat.. so it can live with a female and not breed - when the world et al knows two male rats are just as happy together..
anyway... imho descenting is not a "cruel" act.. the skunks do not suffer physically as a result of having it done, nor do their personalities change mentally..
and yes, skunk spray does smell as bad as they tell you it does!
