| hi, my 6 year old female iguana has always been tamer than tame but the other day, when i put her in the warm sunshine in a run thing, i couldnt get her out again for the high stance, dewlap showing, hissing with mouth open and the incredible tail lashing! I couldnt put my hand in their for two hours! she managed to escape out the top of the cage, so as she was coming out, i just grabbed her (quite gently) to put her back in and im sure she was about to bite me, her mouth was wide open and the hissing was soooo loud! I know iggys can be aggressive , but can anyone help me to as why she changed andd turned on me like this, she has never done it before!
Thanks everyone. |

| I know nothing whatsoever about iggys .... but could she have been overheating in the sun ??
I know some of my rat snakes get aggressive if they get too hot.

| hi, thanks, no she was out for a matter of minutes and it was in the evening whilst it is warm |

| Something like a cat or the sounds of birds may have triggered an aggressive response. If they here seagulls they may mistake them for predatory birds, then when she see you coming with your arms outstretched she must have got scared.
Other than that, it is very odd if she is usually tame. |

| It happens more often than you would think one of our female iguanas cannot go outside in the natural sunlight as she goes the same way we suspect its the natural uv that does this but do not quote me, i would advise either tick gloves for when you get her in from the outside or just not taking her outside in the future. Good luck with her I know how much of a handful they can be |

| The only thing to remember though is that even the most tamest Green iguanas (my Fema\le 5 footer has never gone to attack me) need respect. The are never as tame as dogs but people are often led to believe they are becuase they give very little external expression about how they are feeling.
They are not too intelligent as with most reptiles. They carry instinct with them throughout there entire captive life. |

| yeh i do agree wuth you loulou, i think the natural sunlight along with new smells, plants trees and things to climb there personality changes. i think like gp says, intsint comes in. i do believe they can be tame, bt i dont think it should be said they will never attack . |

| gtp just to correct you iguanas are very inteligent reptiles might be worth you pooping along to AIML to find out a bit more about the iguana intelect before you try to give advice about them. all animals carry instincts not just the iguanas as do we as humans, You may very well have a 5ft iguana good on you if you do and i hope you do not use a heatmat unstatted with it! and iguanas as you shoudl know give alot of external expression you know damn well when an iguana is upset or happy or cold or warm or needs to poo or wants you to go away its all in the head bob colour and movement of the iguana you also get warnings when your iguana does not want to be near you such as for example a warning whip a gaping mouth a bobbing head (do a search for the different bobs and find out what they mean) |

| i do agree, of course most animals will show when theyre going to attack, i personally think it was some thing to do with the sunlight or new territory (im not testing to find out lol) but since then she has only shown agressive (barely) once so ill keep her inside from now on, i dont no what caused her to be like that, but it was spooky lol shes more than happy to sit on my shoulder for hours at a time now. one thing GTP, iguanas have been found to be 1 of the most intelligent lizards, when a variety of tests where taken out. thanks every one |

| Loulou - Iguana's are relatively inteligent for Reptiles yes, but on the whole reptiles are not the most inteligent of animals (with exceptions), so I stand by what I said. |

| i dont think that was what she was saying i think what she was saying is that iguanas DO express how they are feeling very well, and she was just correcting you on 'they give very little external expression about about how they are feeling'. becoz as every (well not in your case i guess) iggy owner knows (from experience) iguanas will ALWAYS let you know how they are feeling to being held/contact etc |
